Come Teach Some Of East Africa’s Brightest Students

Abaarso School of Science & Technology, featured on 60 Minutes and in the New York Times and BBC World, is a non-profit boarding school educating the best and the brightest Somali students in the Horn of Africa. It is located outside of Hargeisa, Somaliland, a breakaway, self-governing region of Somalia. Abaarso prepares students to excel in higher education, while also focusing on extracurricular activities and community service to build character. The school encourages ethics and a strong sense of responsibility for improving the students’ community. While only founded in 2009, Abaarso School has achieved success not seen in the area for several decades. After four graduating classes, Abaarso students are studying at top universities across the world, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, MIT, Georgetown, Amherst, Brandeis, Swarthmore, and many more. As of 2017, Abaarso holds accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) – one of only a dozen schools Sub-Saharan Africa to hold the distinction.

Abaarso School is looking for individuals interested in dedicating at least one year to teaching and building our community. As a teacher, you will join a school culture that puts the growth of the school and the students first, while finding a way around the challenges inherent in working in the developing world. Between the classroom, preparation, student groups, office hours, and other projects, you should expect approximately 70 hours of work each week. With successful performance, significant upward mobility is possible for staff members. After their time at Abaarso, former teachers have gone onto successful careers in education and other industries, and to graduate schools such as Harvard, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, and more.

As a teacher, you will be given round-trip airfare, plus room and board on campus, and a stipend of $250 per month. By far the most important benefit, however, is creating lasting relationships with students whose lives are changed by the opportunity to study at Abaarso.

We are currently accepting applications for a start date in August 2019. Teaching or related experience is preferred but not required. Positions are available in English, social studies, math, and the sciences. To apply, send a resume and cover letter to teach@abaarsoschool.org.
