The Egypt international sprinted from his own half to find the back of the net during Friday’s Premier League match against the relegation-threatened Saints.

Mohamed Salah had been stranded on 49 league goals for the club after failing to notch in any of his previous six league appearances.

However his fine strike at St Mary’s saw him reach his half-century in just his 69th match – a new Liverpool record.

The former Chelsea winger achieved the feat three games earlier than previous record holder Fernando Torres, who notched the same number of goals in 72 matches.

Luis Suarez, another Anfield hero, took 86 league games to achieve his half-century while fourth in the list Robbie Fowler managed it in 88 matches.

Mohamed Salah, who scored his first goal in nine matches, told Sky Sports: “I think that’s goal number 50 for Liverpool in the Premier League, so that’s special.

“I’m very happy to score a goal and help the team, that’s the most important thing for us.”

Defender Van Dijk said: “You know there’s not many games left, any mistakes could cost us. We wanted to win this game no matter what and I think in the second half we pressed and we kept going.

“I don’t think they had any chances in the second half apart from some corners and set pieces but it was a well-deserved win.”

Substitute Jordan Henderson tapped home a late third to seal the success after Naby Keita’s first goal in English football cancelled out Shane Long’s early opener for the in-form hosts.

And the skipper stressed the importance of the remaining matches in the Premier League title race.

“We know we’ve got to win every game so tonight was another big game.

“I thought the lads showed great character in the first half under a little bit of pressure, to come out of that and to go in 1-1 at half-time I thought was good for us.”
