No-one had needed his social media promise to know it was coming.

In a modern way, Mohamed Salah, for some reason, felt compelled to address his club’s supporters in the wake of a defeat.

Premier League footballers seem to spend half their social media lives either explaining or apologizing for a standard loss.

Genuine fans take their team for better or for worse, there really is no need to say sorry.

The only crime would be a lack of effort and no-one has even suggested that has been a Liverpool issue.

But still, Salah had the need to reassure fans after the reversal at Leicester.

“We are champions and we will fight like champions, until the very end. That is my promise to all of you.”

As if physical proof was needed – and in a different competition – Salah provided it here.

He fought, Liverpool fought.

If you wanted a snapshot, there was one when Salah pounced on Lukas Klostermann on the halfway line and set in motion a first-half Liverpool attack that ended with Sadio Mane narrowly failing to convert a Roberto Firmino cross.

Oddly, Salah has not been shielded from the critical light shone on Jurgen Klopp’s side but the Egyptian remains the jewel in this Liverpool crown.

Few can smell danger quite like Salah, few have his remarkable stealth.

The breakthrough goal encapsulated his excellence.

He sensed the dangerous defensive pass, anticipated where it was going, seized the moment, and finished with that casual aplomb to which everyone has become accustomed.

Mane produced a copycat second, complete with an RB Leipzig aberration, but it was Salah who set the tone.

He was hungry, alert, and full of menace yet brimming with composure.

He was his skillful, brilliant self and unrelenting in his work-rate.

He fought and played like a champion.

And no-one had needed his social media promise to know it was coming.
