JERUSALEM — Somaliland’s ambassador to Israel, Dr. Mohamed Hagi Mohamoud, appeared alongside U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee at a diplomatic reception in Jerusalem, an encounter that has drawn renewed attention to Somaliland’s efforts to deepen its international relationships.
The two diplomats attended the Bridge of Gold for International Unity event at Jerusalem’s historic Tower of David, where ambassadors and senior diplomats based in the city gathered for an evening centered on international engagement and unity.
Mohamoud said he was honored to participate in the event alongside Huckabee and fellow diplomatic representatives.
“Honored to participate in this important event at the Tower of David in Jerusalem, the Bridge of Gold for International Unity alongside the U.S. Ambassador and fellow ambassadors and diplomats based in Jerusalem,” Mohamoud wrote on X.
Huckabee, speaking at the gathering, expressed his pleasure at meeting ambassadors representing several countries and specifically mentioned Somaliland among the diplomatic representatives present.
The encounter carries particular political resonance for Somaliland, whose government has made securing formal international recognition a central foreign-policy objective.
A diplomatic moment with Washington in view
The Jerusalem appearance comes at a notable moment for Hargeisa.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro is preparing for an official visit to the United States, where he is expected to pursue discussions aimed at strengthening Somaliland’s relationship with Washington.
The juxtaposition of the Jerusalem meeting and the president’s forthcoming U.S. engagement has fueled speculation among Somaliland supporters about whether the country’s diplomatic outreach is entering a more consequential phase.
Still, the appearance itself does not establish a change in U.S. policy toward Somaliland. Diplomatic meetings and public appearances can signal growing engagement without necessarily indicating an imminent decision on recognition.
For Somaliland, however, visibility alongside senior foreign diplomats remains significant. Hargeisa has sought for years to transform informal relationships and strategic partnerships into formal diplomatic recognition.
The Jerusalem gathering offered another opportunity to cultivate those relationships in person.
From Jerusalem to Washington
Mohamoud’s appearance with Huckabee is also notable because it is not the first reported interaction between the two diplomats.
That continuing contact has attracted attention in Somaliland, where officials and supporters closely monitor signs of increasing engagement with the United States.
The broader diplomatic strategy is increasingly focused on building relationships across multiple capitals rather than relying on a single avenue toward recognition.
Israel occupies a particularly important position in that effort following its recognition of Somaliland in December 2025. The development opened a new chapter in Somaliland’s diplomatic relations and provided Hargeisa with an important platform for expanding its international outreach.
The United States, meanwhile, remains a particularly consequential target because of its political, economic and strategic weight in the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region.
That makes every high-level interaction between Somaliland representatives and U.S. officials subject to heightened scrutiny.
“International relations are built through meaningful connections”
The Jerusalem meeting also prompted praise from Somaliland political figures and supporters abroad.
Ahmed Abdillahi, chairman of the Waddani Party of Minnesota, described Mohamoud’s participation as an important diplomatic moment.
“International relations are built through meaningful connections, mutual trust, and sustained human engagement at the highest levels,” Abdlahi said.
He added that Somaliland’s growing diplomatic presence demonstrated what he described as the country’s effort to build partnerships and strengthen its position internationally.
The comments reflect a broader argument among Somaliland officials and supporters: that recognition is not pursued solely through formal government-to-government negotiations but also through sustained personal relationships, diplomatic visibility and engagement with policymakers.
A relationship under closer scrutiny
For Somaliland, the significance of the Tower of David gathering lies less in the ceremony itself than in the diplomatic context surrounding it.
The presence of Huckabee and Mohamoud at the same international event provides another public illustration of contact between Somaliland’s diplomatic representatives and a senior U.S. official.
Whether that contact eventually translates into a substantive shift in Washington’s policy remains uncertain.
What is clear is that Somaliland is placing increasing emphasis on diplomatic engagement at precisely the moment its leadership is seeking a stronger relationship with the United States.
Jerusalem, in that sense, provided a visible diplomatic waypoint.
Washington is now the more consequential stage.
And as President Irro prepares for his U.S. visit, Somaliland’s diplomats will be watching closely for whether the relationships cultivated abroad can produce a deeper political opening at home.
