Jigjiga is a city in eastern Ethiopia and the capital of the Somali Region of the country. Located in the Jigjiga Zone approximately 80 km (50 mi) east of Harar and 60 km (37 mi) west of the border with Somaliland, the city has an elevation of 1,609 meters above sea level.
The city is located on the main road between Harar and the Somaliland capital city of Hargeisa. Jigjiga was a city of Hararghe province, but with the adoption of the 1995 Somali National Regional State constitution, it became the capital of the Somali Regional State. Jigjiga and the surrounding lands was traditionally inhabited by the Ogaden clan.
