Abdulaziz Ahmed Adem views Mogadishu’s strong opposition to the port deal with Somaliland as a mere “hiccup,” suggesting it serves as a distraction from Somalia’s internal political issues.
Ethiopia remains committed to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, despite the recent uproar in Mogadishu, says Abdulaziz Ahmed Adem (Amb.), chief advisor to the National Intelligence and Security Service and an advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During a conference on regional security in the Horn of Africa at Skylight Hotel on April 19, 2024, Abdulaziz stated that the Ethiopian government stands by the MoU. He believes that Ethiopian access to sea outlets can foster mutual growth with Somalia, which has a coastline of over 3,000 kilometers. Abdulaziz views Mogadishu’s strong opposition to the port deal with Somaliland as a mere “hiccup,” suggesting it serves as a distraction from Somalia’s internal political issues.
Ethiopia intends to proceed with the agreement as part of its commitment to regional integration. Abdulaziz emphasized the importance of unity between Ethiopia and Somalia against designated terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab, Daesh (also known as ISIL/ISIS), and human traffickers. He stressed the need for collaboration to thrive and overcome challenges, rather than opposing an unstoppable agreement.
“By working together, we can thrive and overcome challenges, rather than opposing an agreement that cannot be stopped,” said Abdulaziz.
Abdulaziz urged regional countries to prioritize cooperation and prosperity, reiterating Ethiopia’s dedication to peace and collaboration with neighboring nations. He highlighted Ethiopia’s military contributions to peacekeeping efforts in Sudan and Somalia. Abdulaziz warned against the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somalia, citing potential risks to Ethiopia and the broader region.
“Our military has made significant sacrifices for Somalia, both within its borders and in the pursuit of peace. We are committed to fostering peaceful relations with our neighbors and are ready to take further steps towards this objective. It is crucial for them, as well as others, to recognize our commitment to this cause,” he informed The Reporter.
The MoU, inked on January 1, 2024, between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi, has sparked intense regional and international discussions. Abiy Ahmed has previously stressed the critical importance of sea access for Ethiopia, heightening tensions across the Horn of Africa.
