The African Business Angel Network (ABAN) is to host an Angel Investor Masterclass at the upcoming Somaliland Investment Forum, with a view to encouraging the development of an angel investing ecosystem in the region.

The Somaliland Investment Forum is a three-day event to be held in Hargeisa from September 19 to 22; and will bring together policymakers, donors, investors, and the Somaliland business community to discuss ways to strengthen private sector investment.

As part of the event, ABAN will host a masterclass with the aim of supporting the development of an angel investing culture in Somaliland, by facilitating discussion around angel investing with local, foreign and diaspora investors.

The Angel Investor Masterclass will look at the role informal investors and business angels play in taking early stage ventures through the most risky parts of their life cycle, through the provision of coaching, mentoring, seed and growth capital.

Other topics to be covered include the basics of how angel investing works; investing in syndicates; getting started with angel investing; and an expert panel will also share best practices with the audience.

Discussions will be led by Stephen Gugu founder and director of investor network Viktoria Ventures; ABAN co-founder David van Dijk; and head of investor relations and research lead at VC4A, Thomas van Halen.

“ABAN’s mission is to support the development of early stage investor networks across the continent, and to get many more early stage investors excited about the opportunities in Africa,” says van Dijk.

“We are really excited about being part of this conversation in Somaliland and look forward to work with investors both on the ground and in the diaspora.”
